One of my all-time favorite games to play with my kids and classrooms is “Props” or “It looks like a ___, but really its a ____. I didn’t invent it, it’s an old theater game and I’d bet some version of it was played among cavemen. The only supplies you need are a creative brain, a voice, and an ability to control your laughter when its your turn to speak. Oh, and stuff. Do you have any stuff around your house? I sure do. It’s a brilliant game of improv, quick thinking, creativity, innovation, brainstorming…oh, and you can play it from ages 1-100.
Make up your own rules. We simply pass around a random prop and try to exhaust ideas. You can also have a box of 5-6 props and let each person pull one out each time. Most of the time, this game is played in passing in 5 random minutes of our lives. It’s been brought up at the dinner table, on our way out the door to a soccer game or waiting in the doctor’s office. We’ve also played it many times while making pancakes. I love this game because its free, quick, funny, and oh is it good for your brain.
